With the draft less than a week away, we're hot on the trails of our recent creates; and since omg has done me a solid by examining the league's pitchers, I'm going to keep on rolling and continue around the diamond to shortstop and third baseman!

Shortstop (SS)
Sphyrna Lewin (@Troutstrong)
Lucas Peterson (@lovesmuffins)
Hunter Scott (@"I’ll change this later")
Alex Gregorius (@aCrypticPancake)

The tentative starting spots for shortstop were completed just a few days ago after Alex Gregorious made his bid for a spot in the SBL known. Perhaps best-known as a consistent active in the SBA, Pancake has a strong track record in sim leagues and will likely add to it as he faces a stiff position group that includes the likes of Sharkstrong, KDD, and I'll change this later. It's worth knowing that this shortstop's an absolute monster, standing at 6'8". He's a born-and-bred American hailing from NYC - not the only one of our players to do so - and sports a reasonably balanced build that straddles the line between power hitter and contact batting. Like many of our candidates, he also has displayed well-rounded fielding ratings; in spite of that, he may not even be our front-runner for 2B Golden Glove!

Next up we have Hunter Scott, a born-and-raised country boy from Louisville, Kentucky. He has a prototypical baseball physique at 6'2" and 195 lbs.; also in contrast to Gregorious, however, he's elected to go conservative/contact hitting. Prior to declaring, he was known well as a guy who can easily get on base and set up for power hitters while maintaining a similarly-balanced defensive build. Some scouts have noticed he has had difficulty turning double plays, but otherwise presents as a rock-solid 2B candidate.

Arguably one of the most hotly-contested candidates is Lucas Peterson, a Minnesota native who has given scouts a similar impression to Scott. Compared to most candidates, he's a whiz at making contact and generally has demonstrated to have a good eye, but is overall slightly better rounded defensively than Scott. Some debate that Scott is superior in the field prior to making a throw - as he has superior overall range and a slightly better arm - but Peterson makes up a bit of ground with the ability to turn double plays.

Last, but certainly not least, is veritable sim league titan Sphyrna Lewin, a player who exemplifies the notion of high quality defensive play but sticking literally all 100 of his starting TPE evenly between range, error, arm, and turning double plays. He's a rather meager hitter - with some suggesting that he's little better than a pitcher in that regard - but for those wondering what an ideal defensive specimen looks like at 2B, Lewin is your guy. The question becomes, however, if GMs are willing to take their chances on an abysmal hitter to anchor their defense at what many regard as the most important fielding position short of pitcher and catcher. And with Shark's reputation, I think some might just take a bite.

Third Baseman (3B)
Tyler Martinez (@PowPat)
Brian Strong (@Wheaties_)
Jack Ingof (@a_Ferk)

One of the few infield positions yet to be filled, 3B has some significant offensive and defensive value. And for a while, the only third baseman was Tyler Martinez, managed by PowPat - who has a positive reputation in a couple of sim leagues including the VHL. Much like Gregorious over at shortstop, Martinez has a contact + power-oriented build, but has opted for high-quality baserunning rarely seen in this draft class at the expense of some fielding attributes. And as you'll likely see in the rest of our candidates, 3B (rightfully) has more of a focus on batting than fielding relative to the all-important shortstops.

Next up is everyone's favorite (EFL) Miami Neptune defensive back-turned-3B Brian Strong, managed by Wheaties_. He's a Philly native with an effectively identical current build to Martinez, again going light on the defense in exchange for hitting and baserunning. He's, without a doubt, one of the higher-rated draftees on this list, as he has a strong reputation for producing successful players in multiple leagues.

Last but certainly not least is Jack Ingof, a Saskatchewan native who's managed by a_Ferk. Overall, this player is somewhat newer to sim leagues but has made a strong impression on the VHL and EFL in spite of only being around a matter of weeks-to-months. But don't confuse his relative inexperience with lack of identity: Ingof is one of the best power hitters in the entire SBL, bar-none, having invested all of his starting TPE in power and power alone. He'll probably strike out a fair bit more than his peers, but he's a strong candidate for the Home Run Derby and has been drug tested multiple times by league authorities. They can confirm many times over that no, Ingof is not taking steroids.
